- (1856-1946)American financier and diplomat. He was born in Mannheim, Germany, and settled in the US in 1865. Initially he practised law, but then became active in real estate and banking. From 1913 to 1916 he was US ambassador to Turkey. Later he led a commission to investigate the condition of Jews in Poland. He was active in secular as well as Jewish religious and philanthropic work.
